Brushfire Literature and Arts Journal Currently Employs 5 Part-Time Student Workers. Meet the Small Dream Team Below!
Hello! My name is Phoebe Coogle, and I’m an English Literature major, Economics and Creative Writing minor at UNR. Fiction and creative writing are my predominant passions, so I’m extremely excited to serve as Brushfire’s EIC. When I’m not ranting about niche English topics, I enjoy cooking, animation, and, of course, being generally nerdy.
Hey there! I’m Sequoya Casey, the PR Manager at Brushfire. I’m majoring in Political Science and Philosophy with a minor in Spanish. Aside from my love for politics and philosophy, I’m very passionate about the arts— particularly music and literature. When I’m not out and about (as I do love a good adventure!), I’m usually immersing myself in a good book. I also enjoy cooking, horseback riding, and hanging out with friends!
Greetings everyone! I'm Israel Cruz, Audiobook Producer for Brushfire. I am studying Applied Mathematics while minoring in Music Industry and Japanese. I love sound and anything to do with it and its transformation. When not racking my brain on maths I can barely understand or making some new cacophony I will probably be playing games with friends or trying some new series with my family.
Hello! I’m Abigail MacDiarmid, the Literary Editor at Brushfire. I am an English Literature major and Mathematics minor at the University of Nevada, Reno. My favorite genres are speculative fiction, magical realism, and gothic fiction, but I am open to any and all types of writing. One thing I love about this position is discovering new perspectives and writing styles. I hope that this journal will inspire all those who submit to not be afraid to experiment because sometimes the weirder, the better.
Visual Arts Director
Hey everyone! I’m Danian Arguello, the Art Director at Brushfire. I’m a Fine Arts major and minoring in Entrepreneurship. I absolutely love art, so drawing and creating take up a lot of my time. Besides art, I love listening to music, hanging out with friends, watching anime, and chilling with my dog named Appa.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Angela Zhang ✨
Angela Zhang, a sophomore here at UNR, is a major in biology and a “possible” minor in fine arts.
Like many, she has been creating since she “could hold a pencil,” but she started to take art more seriously in high school, when she could take classes for it. Since graduating from high school, Angela has been self-taught in regards to her art.
Her drawing style has changed over the years. She once mimicked the cartoon illustration-style found in comic books, but in recent years her style has evolved into realism, enjoying drawing things found in her everyday life. The piece she is most proud of, Angela states, is the portrait she did of herself and one of her friends (shown on the last slide).
Angela finds inspiration from other artists, but she also draws (pun intended) inspiration from the world around her.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Ana Perez-McKay ✨
Ana, a Reno local, is a senior here at UNR and is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Although having enjoyed creating since her youth, Ana really started focusing on her art in high school, and even received a Scholastic Art Award.
In college, Ana has done multiple art exhibitions, her most recent one being her BFA Thesis, Dreamhouse.
The images featured were from last year's BFA Midway show. Her exhibition, titled Good As Gold, was on display at the Student Galleries located in the Jot Travis Building. (See photos).

Brushfire is proud to announce that Dani Putney, a writer and Nevada resident who has been published in several editions of our journal, is publishing a book called Dela Torre!
// A search for identity is the current that runs through Dela Torre—both tender and condemning, these poems are conversations with the speaker’s Filipina mother and American father, through which the speaker interrogates and celebrates aspects of their origin. Recalling an American childhood juxtaposed with their mixed-race identity, the speaker searches for recognition in everything from Asian grocery stores to classic art to chromosomes and subatomic particles. Caught between all-American images of Las Vegas, candy shops, and national parks and the mangoes and “Cebu’s finest puff pastry” of the Philippines, the speaker mourns that their “picture of / Asia was painted in / America”—and yet, Dela Torre shows us that remembering the past is an act of love.
Here is a sneak peak into our newest edition of the journal! Keep your eyes peeled around campus for a chance to snag a free copy! The digital version will be available soon for those who are not in Reno to check it out :)
