About Us

The Brushfire Literature & Arts Journal is a student-run organization at the University of Nevada, Reno. Brushfire publishes biannually. All the art that is reviewed and published by Brushfire is submitted through our website. The Brushfire journal exists because of our contributors. Without them, there would be no content, no fuel to set each new Brushfire into print.

With each iteration of the Brushfire, we strive to represent the diversity, originality and dedication of our artistic community. As an ASUN organization, we also strive to be the creative outlet for our student body at UNR.  Our main priority is to connect with the various art communities at UNR and throughout Reno. However, anyone can submit to Brushfire. We receive and publish art from across the country. So, while Brushfire in centered around locality, we seek inclusivity and do not reject art based on the artists’ location.

Brushfire hosts art-oriented events and workshops (e.g. open mics, poetry/writing workshops, guest speakers) throughout the semester. If you are interested in working, volunteering, or getting published in Brushfire — or if you want to help produce the semesterly publication – please contact us!

Our Staff

Nick Huffman-Editor in Chief

My name is Nick Huffman, and I study literature, philosophy, and psychology here at UNR. When it comes down to it, I am just a guy who has always felt deeply connected to and moved by the stories of other people. if you see me around, don’t be shy! Come say hello!

Ivana Lang-Visual Arts Director

Hi! I’m Ivana Lang, a freshman honors student at UNR, currently studying as a Pre-Business major and Army ROTC cadet. Visual art is generally a means of expression without words, so I have the opportunity and challenge as Visual Arts Director to interpret that experience into words. If you see me sprinting across campus to my next destination, please stop and remind me that life isn’t a race to a finish line, but a journey to be savored.

Matthew Cotter-Zine Editor

My name is Matt Cotter, and I’m an English Literature major at UNR, with a minor in Cinema and Media Studies. I try to study varying subjects, but I’m mostly interested in writing, art, film, music, and philosophy, so I became involved in the journal to be exposed to other writers and ideas.

Adia Monzon-PR Manager

Hello! My name is Adia Monzon, and I am a Journalism major. I enjoy doodling and working in Illustrator on my free time. My dream is to become a graphic designer in the music industry and I love cats!

Naomi Cook-Zine Editor

Hi, I’m Naomi. I love experimenting with graphic design and coming up with new ways to make art with what’s at hand. When I’m not at Brushfire, I am eating Bourbon Cherry Gelato and spending time with friends.

Alec Brown-Podcast Producer

I’m a Writing Major that makes podcasts, games, and horror stories. I spend most of my time zoning out to music.
